Beginners

White Hats

If you’re a parent who wants their baby or young child to learn how to swim, a beginner’s swimming course is a great place to start. These courses are designed to teach the basics of swimming, including water safety, floating, kicking, and arm movements. They usually take place in a shallow pool and are led by experienced swimming instructors who can guide you through the process. The lessons are structured to gradually increase in difficulty as you gain confidence and skill, so you can progress at your own pace. By the end of the course, you should have a solid foundation of swimming techniques that you can build on and use to enjoy the water safely.

Stage 1

Red Hats

Stage 1 of the Learn to Swim programme is intended for individuals who are new to swimming and have little experience in the water. During this stage, swimmers will learn fundamental water skills such as entering the water safely, moving forward and backward for a distance of 5 metres, and moving sideways for a distance of 5 metres with their feet on or off the floor. They will also learn how to scoop water and wash their face, feel comfortable with water showered from overhead, and move from a flat floating position on their front or back and return to standing. Furthermore, swimmers will develop their ability to push and glide in a flat position on their front or back from a wall, and understand two essential pool rules. Upon completion of Stage 1, swimmers will have a basic understanding of water safety and the skills necessary to enter and exit the water safely.

Stage 2

Orange Hats

Stage 2 of the Learn to Swim programme is tailored for swimmers who have acquired fundamental water skills. During this stage, swimmers will learn to jump safely into the water from poolside and blow bubbles rhythmically with their nose and mouth submerged. They will also acquire the ability to move from a flat floating position on their front or back to standing without assistance, and perform a tuck to rotate from a flat floating position on the front or back to a floating position on the other side. Additionally, swimmers will learn to push off from a wall and glide on their front or back with their arms extended, and move for 5 metres using a recognised leg action without floatation equipment. They will also learn to execute a log roll from the front to the back and back to the front, and exit the water without assistance. Upon completion of Stage 2, swimmers will have enhanced their water skills and be able to execute a range of techniques and movements with confidence.

Stage 3

Yellow Hats

Stage 3 of the Learn to Swim programme is designed for swimmers who have already learned the basic water skills. In this stage, swimmers will learn to jump into the water and submerge, as well as sink, push away from the wall, and maintain a streamlined position. They will also learn to push and glide on their front and back with arms extended and log roll onto the other side, and travel 5 metres on the front, perform a tuck to rotate onto the back and return on the back. Additionally, swimmers will learn to fully submerge and pick up an object, correctly identify three of the four key water safety messages, push and glide and travel 10 metres on the front and back, perform a tuck float and hold it for three seconds, and exit the water without using steps. By the end of Stage 3, swimmers will have improved their water skills and be able to perform a variety of techniques and movements with confidence.

Stage 4

Green Hats

Stage 4 of the Learn to Swim programme is designed for swimmers who have already mastered basic water skills. In this stage, swimmers will learn to perform a sequence of changing shapes while floating on the surface and demonstrate an understanding of floating. They will also learn to push and glide from the wall towards the pool floor, kick 10 metres of backstroke, front crawl, butterfly and breaststroke with one item of equipment optional. Additionally, swimmers will learn to perform a headfirst sculling action for 5 metres in a flat position on their back, travel on their back and log roll in one continuous movement onto their front, travel on their front and log roll in one continuous movement onto their back, and push and glide and swim 10 metres with the choice of stroke optional. By the end of Stage 4, swimmers will have developed their water skills and be able to perform a range of techniques and movements with increasing proficiency.

Stage 5

Light Blue Hats

Stage 5 of the Learn to Swim programme is intended for swimmers who have already mastered fundamental swimming techniques. During this stage, swimmers will be taught how to perform a flat stationary scull on their back, a feet-first sculling action for 5 metres in a flat position on their back, and a sculling sequence with a partner for 30-45 seconds to include a rotation. They will also learn how to tread water for 30 seconds and perform three different shaped jumps into deep water. In addition, swimmers will develop their swimming techniques by pushing and gliding for 10 metres of backstroke, front crawl, breaststroke, and butterfly, all performed to Swim England expected standards. They will also learn how to perform a handstand and hold it for a minimum of three seconds, a forward somersault, and demonstrate an action for getting help. Upon completion of Stage 5, swimmers will have developed advanced water skills and be able to perform a range of techniques and movements with increased proficiency.

Stage 6

Dark Blue Hats

The Learn to Swim Stage 7 programme is for advanced swimmers who have already mastered a range of water skills. In this stage, swimmers will be taught how to prepare for exercise and understand why it is important, as well as sinking, pushing off on the side from the wall, gliding, kicking and rotating into backstroke and front crawl. They will also learn to swim 10 metres wearing clothes and push and glide while swimming front crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, and backstroke to include a specific number of rhythmical breaths. Additionally, swimmers will learn to push and glide and swim 25 metres with the choice of stroke optional, all performed to Swim England expected standards. They will also learn to perform a ‘shout and signal’ rescue and a surface dive. By the end of Stage 7, swimmers will have developed advanced water skills and be able to perform a range of techniques and movements with increasing proficiency, ready for more advanced levels of swimming.

Stage 7

Purple Hats

Stage 7 swimming courses are designed for advanced swimmers who want to further improve their skills and techniques. In this course, swimmers will focus on refining their strokes, building endurance, and mastering advanced skills such as starts, turns, and finishes. Swimmers will also have the opportunity to develop their skills in more complex swimming strokes such as butterfly and backstroke. The course is led by experienced swimming instructors who will provide individual feedback and guidance to help swimmers reach their goals. By the end of stage 7, swimmers will have developed a high level of swimming proficiency and be well-prepared to compete at a national level if desired.
